Why It Was Originally Written
We realized very early in the creation of Perpetua Advisors that not every CIO was cut out to do what we do. During a memorable trip to India for the wedding of the son of a close friend, a group of former CIOs gathered to share stories about their careers. We discovered a similar pattern, which of course led to a sketch on a bar napkin. (That original sketch is included above.)
That sketch turned into a formal article, which was eventually published by Heller Search Associates on March 11, 2020. You can read the full article here. The reaction was very favorable and led to some lively discussions with similar experiences.
Our original intention, however, was less about agreeing on the seven stages, but more about where we wanted to recruit CIOs for Perpetua. We realized that the best target were CIOs either early in their career or becoming burned out by the demands of the job. They still seek challenges but want to be more hands-on than the title sometimes allows.
Here is a graph that was not in the original article, which shows our target profile:
Current Perspective
Since the article's publication, we have become even more convinced of our target profile. If you would like to become part of Perpetua, let us know!
